Buffing Acrylic and Plexiglass Sheet

It is easy to buff the edge of an acrylic sheet into a crystal clear edge, just as clear as the surface of the sheet.

First you need to prepare the edge by sanding all of the saw marks from the surface of the edge.
This can be done with a 100 grit paper, a lower grit paper is needed if the edge is really rough.  After using a 100 grit paper move to a 300 grit then to a 400 to 600 grit.
Wet/dry sand paper works best, use a small amount of water when sanding.
Make sure that all of the saw marks are removed from the edge and the edge is smooth and clean.
Next, use a buffing wheel on the edge.  We offer buffing wheels in 5"  to 10" diameters, 50 ply wheels.
Our 50 ply are approx. 1-1/2" wide, this makes the polishing job easier and faster.
If you have a little buffing to do, use our 5" wheel, if you have a lot of buffing, use a 8" or 10" 50 ply wheel.

Arbor Adapter

If you are buffing the edges of a project you can use our buffing wheels with an electric drill with our arbor adaptor.  Turn the wheel at full speed, with the wheel moving back and forth against the edge of the acrylic sheet.  The arbor adapter allow use any of our buffing wheels with any electric drill.

#114 Baldor Buffer

If you have a lot of buffing, or if you work a with acrylic sheet all of the time you might want to consider purchasing a Baldor buffer.  Baldor makes one of the best buffers available and each buffer is backed by a 3 year warranty.  The buffer should turn at 1800 rpm, this allows the sheet to be polished but not burned.  When the buffer is attached to a work bench the we suggest using a 8" 50 ply wheel.

Buffing Wheels

Our cloth buffing wheels are the ideal choice for buffing all types of acrylic sheet, 1/16" to 2" thick. Our wheels are manufactured to the highest standards, the are specifically manufactured for acrylic sheet and they will produce excellent results. It is usually a good idea to get a larger wheel, they last longer and polish better. When you are using our wheels with an electric drill, and you are doing a small amount of buffing, you should consider the 5" to 6" dia. wheels, they are easier to work with. If you have a lot of buffing to do and are using our Baldor buffer, try using our 8" wheels or larger. You need to make sure that you have enough clearance between the buffing shaft and the top of the table the buffer rests on, an 8" dia. wheel is recommended..  Some people like our spiral sewn wheels. Since the wheel is sewn and not loose it is a much stiffer wheel. Be careful when using a spiral sewn wheel so that you do not burn the sheet.

5" Dia. 50 Ply Thick $3.95/Each
5" Dia. 50 Ply Thick $39.50/Per Dozen
6" Dia. 50 Ply Thick $5.00/Each
6" Dia. 50 Ply Thick $50.00/Per Dozen
8" Dia. 50 Ply Thick $6.75Each
8" Dia. 50 Ply Thick $67.50/Per Dozen
10" Dia. 50 Ply Thick $8.90/Each
10" Dia. 50 Ply Thick $89.00/Per Dozen

Spiral Sewn Buffing Wheels

We also carry a spiral sewn buffing wheel. This wheel is a much more stiff wheel. Spiral sewn wheels are the workhorse of most buffing and polishing jobs. Because the plies of cotton cloth are sewn together spirally, the wheel becomes much harder and more pressure can be exerted on it. Be careful when you use this wheel so that you do not burn or cut the acrylic.

6" Dia. Spiral 50 Ply Thick $5.75/Each
6" Dia. Spiral 50 Ply Thick $57.50/Per Dozen
8" Dia. Spiral 50 Ply Thick $7.50Each
8" Dia. Spiral 50 Ply Thick $75.00/Per Dozen
10" Dia. Spiral 50 Ply Thick $9.50/Each
10" Dia. Spiral 50 Ply Thick $95.00/Per Dozen

Buffing Compounds

We offer several types buffing compound, but you should start with our general purpose Dico blue compound.  Simply touch the compound to the spinning wheel, you do not want to gum up the wheel with the compound, so use it sparingly, the compound goes a long way.  If you are using our Baldor buffer, hold the sheet with both hands and move the edge back and forth against the wheel.  Be careful not to apply too much pressure, let the wheel polish the edge.  Keep the sheet constantly moving across the wheel so that the material does not get too hot.  Start buffing in the middle of the sheet and be very careful when you get to the edges.  The wheel will try to catch the edge and throw it across the room.  Always hold the sheet tight and with a little bit of practice you will be able to get excellent results.  Always wear safety glasses! and follow the directions supplied by the manufacture of the buffer.
